The 60 Most Important Cities in the World

The British newspaper The Independent called London "the world's capital" which it concluded after a study of 60 world's greatest cities.

During this study that lasted for several months, the results of which were published on Saturday, 22nd of December, the newspaper was comparing such data as population, financial markets, maturity of tourism, shipping infrastructure and transport, sports and cultural events. After combining of the multiple indicators, London was considered to be a winner.

The fact that the first underground in the world was built in London and that this city hosted the Olympic Games twice over the last 100 years (1908 and 1948) and even not taking into attention such big sporting evens as the Tour de France, and the fact that one of the world's largest stock exchanges is situated there - all these advantages favored its prominence. But may be one of the most important indicators was namely that it was a multinational city. According to the mayor of the British capital Ken Livingstone, "London is considered to be the world's first financial center and the world's greatest city". Citizens of London are proud of its "unity of variety" and consider its multinational features to be one of the greatest advantages. As about 300 languages are spoken in London, it can be called "The most international city in the world".

In the ratings composed by The Independent after London there follow New York, Paris, Tokyo, Chicago, Madrid, Washington, Los-Angeles and Rome. Addis Ababa and Beirut complete the list.
